Theoretical Design - Marisol

Date

Fall 2024

The play Marisol is set in a dystopian society where things are in ruin, and I wanted that represented in my set. I decided to use a forced perspective in my buildings both in size and in levels of destruction. The buildings painted on the outside of the proscenium are in full scale and are completely intact, and as we go back they get smaller and more destroyed. I created this effect using graffiti, moss, rebar, cracks, and crumbling building parts.
In addition to the buildings on the set there are piles of rubble and debris. These illustrate a world in disarray and also serve a practical purpose. These piles of rubble contain chairs and various scenic elements needed in the show, such as gravestones, a fire hydrant, a bed frame, golf clubs, subway poles, etc. My vision is the actors will pull items from the piles to use in the scenes and create the various locations needed in this play.
